The regular temperature monitoring of hot & cold-water systems is a basic requirement of the HSE's ACOP L8 and is far more involved than putting a thermometer under a couple of taps. Failing to actively monitor, record and manage water temperatures in a "Technically Competent" manner can leave people at serious risk and leave you liable to fines & prosecution.
Ensuring your water temperatures meet the requirements of the ACOP L8 throughout the entire hot & cold-water system is the safest and most cost-effective way to prevent and control Legionella Bacteria. Even when you are competent, remembering to take water temperatures, getting to the outlets you need to inspect, recording the temperatures and ensuring they are compliant with the HSE's ACOP L8 can easily go wrong.
How do you know if you are competent? The ACOP L8 does not state exact competence requirements. However, plumbers are taught the correct way to take and monitor water temperatures in City & Guilds and NVQ Level 3 plumbing qualifications, so it is reasonable to assume that is the correct required standard.
