Most water systems need to be cleaned & disinfected at some point in their lifetime. Often called chlorination the process involves dosing the system with chemicals to kill any bacteria. Water systems should be cleaned & disinfected when they are first installed or when testing has shown the presence of bacteria. Spray outlets (usually showers) should be regularly cleaned and disinfected to prevent Legionella bacteria.

Water Wise are approved by Trading Standards and certified by Trust Mark who are a Government endorsed competent person scheme. Our assessors are also members of the CIPHE, recognised by DEFRA and the Secretary of State as Approved Contractor Persons under the Water Supply Regulations and are Water Safe registered as required by the Department of Health's HTM 04-01.
Cold Water Storage Tanks
Advice is often given that Cold Water Storage Tanks need to be cleaned and disinfected annually. This is not true. Tanks only need to cleaned and disinfected when there is a reason to do so such as a positive Legionella test or after a visual inspection identifies an increased risk.
Before carrying out any cleaning and disinfection our engineers will take water samples to test for not just Legionella but also TVC's, Ecoli and Coliform bacteria. This allows us to benchmark the state of the tank before carrying out and remedial work.
Once any remedial work has been carried out we will retest the tanks to confirm the effectiveness of the cleaning and disinfection.
Spray Outlets
Spray Outlets (usually showers) need to be cleaned and disinfected at least quarterly. Cleaning a spray outlet for Legionella is not the same as normal cleaning. The shower must be dismantled as much as possible and special cleaning products must be used to clean the shower and its componants.
At sites which present an increased risk your risk assessment may recommend that spray outlets are cleaned and disinfected more regularly.
Once completed the work that has been carried out needs to be recorded in your Legionella Logbook.
