Most water systems need to be cleaned & disinfected at some point in their lifetime.  Often called chlorination the process involves using chemicals to kill any bacteria.

Water systems should be cleaned & disinfected when they are first installed, when substantial changes are made, all or part of the system has not been used for more than a few weeks or testing has shown the presence of bacteria.  For most sites, spray outlets and showers should be cleaned and disinfected at least quarterly.
